   परंतु 1871 में एक विख़्यात भैतिकविद जे.सी . मैक़्सवेल ने ऊष्मा गतिकी के इस नियम को ताक पर रखने हुए बड़ी चतुराई से एक ऐसे प्राणी की कल्पना की थी जो ज्ञान तथा शक्तिसंपन्न जीव था तथा आकार में वह किसी अणु के बराबर था .
2.    यह राक्षस अणुओं को पृथक रूप में देख सकता है तथा इस छेद को बंदकर अथवा खोलकर वह द्रुतगामी अणुओं को आ से भ् भाग में और मंदगामी अणुओं को भ् से आ में जाने देता है.इस तरह कोई काम किये बिना ही भ् के तापमान में वृद्धि होगी तथा आ का तापमान घट जायेगा.यह ऊष्मा गतिकी के दूसरे नियम का उल्लंघन है ( चित्र-21 देखें ) .
